The 3 Hook Formulas That Stop the Scroll

Your first 3 seconds decide everything. Learn the exact hook formulas that make people stop, watch, and engage.

On average, you have 3 seconds to convince someone to keep watching. That's it. Three seconds. After that, they're gone — scrolling past your content forever.

The good news? You don't need to be a genius to hook people. You just need to know the formulas.

Hook #1: The Pattern Interrupt

Do something unexpected. Say something controversial. Show something unusual.

Examples:

  • "Stop posting reels. Here's why."
  • "Everyone is doing this wrong."
  • A video of a messy desk that suddenly reveals a perfectly organized drawer

The key: Your opening frame must be DIFFERENT from what people expect to see.

Hook #2: The Promise

Tell viewers exactly what they'll learn or get by watching.

Examples:

  • "3 tricks to double your following in 30 days"
  • "The exact script I use to get 1M views"
  • "In this video, I'll show you how to..."

The key: Be specific. Vague promises don't hook anyone.

Hook #3: The Curiosity Gap

Start a story. Ask a question. Leave them wanting more.

Examples:

  • "I spent $5K on this course and..." (stop before revealing if it was worth it)
  • "The secret to our success? It started with a $0 budget."
  • "POV: You finally figured out..."

The key: Create tension. Make them NEED to know what happens next.

How to Use These Hooks

Practice. Test. Repeat. Here's your process:

  1. Write 10 hook options before filming. Don't commit to the first one.
  2. Test different hooks on the same content. See which performs best.
  3. Track your retention rate. High retention = great hook.
  4. Double down on what works. Iterate and improve.

The best creators aren't born with great hooks. They develop them through practice. Start testing today.
